Pediatric Crowns in Hudson, MA

A pediatric dental crown is a dental restoration used to restore damaged teeth in children. Teeth with decay or fractures are typically considered for crowns. Dental crowns are custom-created to cover the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line. At Restoration Smiles: Adult & Pediatric Dentistry, we place a crown to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. Your child can eat and drink normally after a pediatric crown is placed. This is because the crown is cemented in place; your child will not need to remove it at any time.

The Importance of Pediatric Crowns

A pediatric dental crown is a restoration placed over a tooth to restore its form and function. It can be made of various materials but is most often made from porcelain or ceramic. These materials are solid and durable, making them an excellent option for protecting and strengthening teeth in children. The crown is typically fabricated to resemble a natural tooth and is bonded to the tooth using dental cement.

Pediatric crowns are commonly used to protect broken-down teeth with large cavities and baby teeth that have loosened due to excessive wear. The crown will help hold the tooth in place and restore the child’s ability to chew and speak properly. It will also prevent further damage to the tooth structure and the surrounding teeth and gums.

Sometimes a baby tooth will fall out prematurely because there is not enough room in the mouth for the permanent tooth to emerge. When this happens, the space left behind can make it difficult for your child’s mouth to develop as it should. As a result, your child may end up with crooked teeth and bite issues that can be more difficult to correct in the future. Because pediatric crowns are custom-made to fit a child’s smile, they can help provide the proper spacing to allow the permanent tooth to come in correctly. This allows your child to avoid issues with jaw development and prevents the need for orthodontics later in life.

The Procedure for Pediatric Crowns

The tooth is first prepared to accommodate a crown by removing any decay and some of the natural enamel. The dentist then takes an impression of the prepped tooth and sends that model to a lab to make a custom crown. In the meantime, the prepared tooth is fitted with a temporary crown to protect the tooth from further damage until the new one is ready. Once the custom crown has been received from the laboratory, the patient returns to the office, and the dentist removes the temporary crown and places the custom one in place.
